Special Report on Thoroughbred Safety Research: Understanding and Preventing Catastrophic Injuries

LEXINGTON, Ky. – TheHorse.com presents a special report on catastrophic injury research, now available online. Respected members of the equine industry including Dr. Larry Bramlage and Dr. Wayne McIlwraith provide an in-depth exploration of catastrophic injuries in the Thoroughbred racehorse, focusing on what veterinarians know about catastrophic injuries based on the available scientific data, and highlighting what work is still to be done.

The report is also available in the July issue of The Horse: Your Guide To Equine Health Care, now available on newsstands.

Following the euthanasia of the filly Eight Belles, who suffered catastrophic injuries to both front legs a quarter-mile after finishing second in this year’s Kentucky Derby, members of every sector of the Thoroughbred industry have banded together to proactively address safety and welfare issues.

The Horse magazine is all about the physical animal and how we can better care for and manage that animal,” said Kimberly S. Brown, Publisher/Editor of The Horse. “We saw the need to collate information on catastrophic injuries and delve into what we know, and what we don’t know, about protecting our competition horses, whether they be Thoroughbreds or any other breed or discipline.”

Some of the areas covered in the report include:

What are catastrophic injuries?

  • How often do Thoroughbred racehorses suffer catastrophic injuries?
  • Why do catastrophic equine athletic injuries happen?
  • Gender, age, and drug issues.
  • Bone pathology, conditioning, and microfractures.
  • Breeding dilemmas: speed vs. soundness.
  • The role of track surfaces.
  • What is the industry doing?
  • Who is responsible for racehorse safety?

Dr. Stacey Oke, a Canadian medical writer, scientific researcher, and licensed veterinarian, authored the report. Oke’s primary fields of interest are nutrition and dietary health supplements, osteoarthritis, and inflammation. She writes for various magazines and peer-reviewed veterinary and medical journals, and is involved in continuing education for veterinarians and physicians.

Subscribers to The Horse will automatically receive the July issue. Non-subscribers may purchase a copy of this issue for $4.95 by contacting Blood-Horse Publications’ customer service at 800-582-5604, or e-mailing Subscribe@TheHorse.com.

TheHorse.com Updates its Look

TheHorse.com launched the first phase of a redesign this week in order to better serve its users in their pursuit of cutting-edge, veterinarian-approved information on horse health. The cleaner-cut, user-friendly format has been released in conjunction with the redesign of its print counterpart, The Horse: Your Guide To Equine Care, which is rolling out its new look in the July issue. The changes to TheHorse.com are the first in a number of steps to better serve our users with information on horse health, care, management, and welfare in a variety of ways, including breaking news, in-depth articles, electronic newsletters, videos, Webinars, Horse Courses, downloadable Special Reports, RSS news feed, Ask the Vet questions and answers, and blogs.

Users of TheHorse.com will continue to notice the addition of new features on the Web site, including blogs, topic-themed "communities" designed to foster interaction between users and with professionals, and new online learning opportunities. More than 10 Webinars and Horse Courses are set to appear under the Videos section of TheHorse.com (www.TheHorse.com/Videos.aspx) in 2008, and other videos, including the weekly Ryder Report, have become popular fixtures on the site.

Christy West, Web Editor for TheHorse.com, and Dawn Garner, technical project manager for TheHorse.com's parent company, Blood-Horse Publications, and other staff members revamped the site by reorganizing and restructuring the look in order for users to find information relevant to the problem they're researching.

"This is a great first step to make TheHorse.com a more user-friendly place for horse owners and managers to find the information they need to better care for their horses," said Kimberly S. Brown, Publisher/Editor of The Horse brand. "We invite our users to let us know what they want on the Web site by e-mailing editorial@TheHorse.com with topic or feature suggestions."
