Welcome to the blog for the forthcoming book Equine ER: Stories from a Year in the Life in an Equine Veterinary Hospital. The nonfiction book takes place at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, and will be published in summer 2009 by Eclipse Press, the official online store of TheHorse.com.

Rood & Riddle is known as the "Mayo Clinic" of horse hospitals. From the intensive care unit where a preemie foal struggles to live ... to surgical suites where million dollar thoroughbreds are operated on, this blog follows the development of the book that I'm writing through photo, video, and text postings. I'll post every Monday. Your feedback is welcomed.

I bet this could easily be as crazy as the TV show ER. All the bizarre cases and wonderful success stories. Learning the work flow for chaotic emergencies would be engaging. This is going to teach people a lot of knowledge.

As a lifelong lover of the James Herriot books, this blog is a dream come true!  Thanks!

In answer to the question about whether there will be commentary on the blog - yes, especially with the photos. The videos are fairly self-explanatory. As the author of the book, I'll be providing the commentary. I'm not a veterinarian but a journalist. The book's goal is to give both horse people and a general audience an in-depth look inside the equine hospital ... explaining sophisticated medical procedures as well as the often compelling back story of horses and clients (along w/the quirkiness and engaging personalities of both doctors, staff and owners!). Thanks again for visiting this blog.
