Whether marketing hype or truth, Budweiser has a Facebook page that allows you to view three video ads and pick the one you like; one is with the Clydesdales. So, view and vote! Read More

Just For Fun

I know we all get the "fun" e-mails from our friends, but sometimes they hit a little too close to home. Do you recognize yourself in any of the following: Only horse people ... * Know that all topical medications come in either indelible blue, neon yellow, or purple. * Think nothing of eating a sandwich after cleaning out stables. * Know why a thermometer has a foot of string attached to one end of... President Signs Law Accelerating Haiti Donation Deductions

On Jan. 22 President Obama signed into law the Haiti Assistance Income Tax Relief Act. The new law allows taxpayers to deduct contributions made for the relief of victims in areas affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti on their 2009 tax returns instead of on their 2010 returns. To be eligible for an accelerated deduction, the contributions must be made after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1,... Read More

Let's Sic the Press on Them!

How can you get the press (i.e., TheHorse.com) involved in covering a welfare or other equine issue? We often have people who want TheHorse.com to solve a local equine problem, whether legal or personal. We get phone calls, e-mails, letters, and occasionally (like today) we get unmarked packages with no return addresses. Some of these folks think: "Let's sic the press on the bad guys!" Which translates... Read More

Haiti--What Can You Do?

This has nothing to do with horses, but it has to do with horse people. We care. Sometimes we seem to care more for animals than humans, but that's just the way we are built. In this case, however, I feel we as an equine community need to reach out to help. There is fear that 500,000 people are dead in Haiti after a 7.0 earthquate hit near the Port-au-Prince area. There are 2 million people living... Read More

Kentucky Going to the ... Chickens?

Kentucky is known for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Little did I realize that was a race. And you know what, in 2009 it looks like the chickens won! In Kentucky, "Horse Capital of the World," 2009 saw the poultry industry top state livestock receipts at about $930 million, according to projections from University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. The equine sector was expected to... Read More

Cold Weather, Frozen Pipes!

Welcome to winter! 2010 is starting in Kentucky with a week of sub-freezing temperatures. I put the heat tape on the hydrant in the barn, put the electric heaters in the stock tanks, unhooked the short hose every night to keep the hydrant from freezing. But still, a water line between the house and the barn has frozen, and the cold water pipe in the master bath is frozen. Sheesh! I had opened faucets... Read More
